My first impression

When I came in IDEC, last April 2017, I was surprised with good welcome where we meet with Baba Sensei and my colleagues. That showed to me a good team work.

Related to first presentation, I learnt many things because it was my first time where I got how can I do a research deeply. Before presentation my ideas focused to external factors which can affect the students’ mathematics performance, after my presentation I changed my orientation to student ability.

現在ザンビアプログラムの一環で、JICA二本松訓練所にて青年海外協力隊の派遣前訓練に参加しております。100名ほどの派遣候補生と寝食をともにしつつ、語学の勉強に覆われている日々は若干ストレスフルですが、刺激も多く楽しく過ごせています。

特に、今まで「数学教育」という専門性の高い視点から国際協力について考えていましたが、ここでは様々な分野や手法で開発に携わっている人がいて、そのような人たちとの出会いを通して多くのことを学べていると思います。

訓練での授業や講座を受け、ザンビアで教師として働くということにやっと現実味が出てきたように感じています。派遣後も様々な困難が待ち受けていると思いますが、この訓練期間を有効に使い、教師として働くための実践的な準備だけでなく、ザンビアで遂行する調査ための準備にも励みたいと思います。

Hello everyone! I am now participating in an intensive training course held in Fukushima prefecture as a JOCV volunteer. There are about 100 volunteers that are going to be dispatched to countries all over the world. To be spending every sing hours of your day with a 100 strangers is slightly stressful, but I am somehow managing to enjoy myself, as well as pursuing preparations for the research and activities in Zambia. Wish me luck everybody!

My name is Dini Asri Kusnia Dewi, but people used to call me Diaz. I was born and raised in Bandung, Indonesia. From childhood, I never go to school through a highway that has a traffic lights. But for the first time I went to a school far from home, I literally penetrated the sky to cross the oceans and the country.

Hello!

My name is CHEA Soth, you can call me Soth, from Cambodia. I work as a mathematics educator at Phnom Penh Regional Teacher Training Center (PPRTTC) where this center will be upgraded to Teacher Education College (TEC) by 2018. I am 34 years old, and I am married with two children.

I am a scholarship master student under JICA long-term program called Knowledge Co-Creation Program (KCCP) with majoring in mathematics education. My research topic is " The Levels of Thinking Skills: A comparative studies of Cambodian and Mathematics Textbook" and my academic supervisor is professor BABA Tukuya.

It is my first time to be here, in Japan and I feel like everything here is different from my country. People here are more attractive and respectable. I cordially welcomed from people here, especially my senior in lab Baba sansei. Moreover, I noticed that people who drive cars or big vehicles also give priorities to those who ride bicycles or walk, but in my country, walkers and riders have to be very careful with the cars or trucks as the big vehicles are more prior. By the way, when I ride the bicycle to school, I really miss my high school life almost twenty years ago. I have never ridded it since I finished high school, so It seems like I am turning to my high school life.

Finally, I would like to thank to BABA sansei, a dean of International Development and Cooperation (IDEC) department, who offer me a chance to be here and accepted me to be his supervisee. I would also thank to Putra san, who has guided me since my first day in Japan, and also thank to all seniors master and doctorial students who offer me a warm welcome into Baba lab. I am very happy to know all of you and hope to learn more from you to broaden my horizon. Thank you for warm welcome again!

Meina Berlianti

Hello guys, my name is Meina Berlianti, just call me Meina. I am from Banjarnegara, small city in Central Java, Indonesia. In 2006, I moved to Yogyakarta to continue my bachelor degree. I took Mathematics Education in Yogyakarta State University. Since 2011, I worked at Budi Mulia Dua Junior High School as a mathematics teacher. Then in 2016, I moved to Japan to continue my master degree in Hiroshima University. I am interested to research about improving students’ understanding on linear equation.

By the way, it is my first time coming to Japan. I arrived in Japan on September 24, 2016. I landed in Osaka airport. Fortunately, the temperature was not different with Indonesia at that time, it is quite warm. As you know that Indonesia is a tropical country. It is always hot there almost for a whole year.

The next thing that I notice about Japan is the traffic situation. There are so many people ride the bicycle here. Almost every person in Japan has their own bicycle. I was really surprised because not so many people in Indonesia ride a bicycle on the street. Most of us only rides a bicycle during weekend for hobby or exercising. One of my friends, said to me that “the one who rides bicycle is a king”. Then, I realized that it is true. Most of car driver and motor cycle driver always give priority to the bicycle rider here. You will never get this priority in Indonesia. I know it is bad but I have to admit it. In Indonesia, the one who drive the biggest or the most luxurious car is the king.

はじめまして、2016年10月に入学しました日下智志と申します。国内で教員として勤務した後、教育コンサルタントとしてJICAが実施するアフリカ諸国のプロジェクトに携わり5年が過ぎたころ、現場での実践や経験のみを蓄積していくだけではなく、それらを学問的な立場でとらえて研究することでさらに教育改善に貢献していきたいという思いが募り、IDECに入学しました。アフリカ諸国の算数カリキュラムについて研究をしています。よろしくお願いいたします。

みなさま、はじめまして。4月に入学しました吉田華奈と申します。IDECの馬場研で研究できるのをとても楽しみにしておりました。私はこれまで公立小学校で教員をし、その後青年海外協力隊としてガーナへ３年間赴任し、アカン族という民族と一緒に生活しておりました。活動では教育事務所に所属し、学校を巡回して算数と理科の授業をしたり、教員向けのワークショップを開いたり、学校対抗計算大会など楽しく燃える企画をする中で、途上国教育に携わる楽しさと厳しさを初めて知りました。帰国して、もっともっと深く知りたい気持ちが強くなり、ここへたどり着きました。現場からは少し離れて、今度はもう少し冷静に様々な文献やいろいろな人との交流から、自分の専門分野を深く掘ってみたいと思います。よろしくお願いします。

Graduation is always a special and joyous occasion, but this graduation day was more special than all the others. For me, this graduation signified that I have reached the pinnacle in my field in terms of degrees. My dream has become a reality. I was elated. Graduation day, the one day, one moment of receiving the certificate nullifies all the arduous tasks that I endured. It caused me to reflect on the many days I thought of giving up and thank God that I persisted. I am thankful that I had good friends and classmate who encouraged me. I am grateful and humbled my this experience.

私は、ザンビアプログラムを希望しています。今、青年海外協力隊の第一次試験の合格発表待ちです。

Hanami Party 2017

It has been past almost one month for our Hanami party with another lab in Education Development division.
It was my first time have Hanami party outside the IDEC building, and it was so fun. The backyard of IDEC has so many Sakura trees with a different type of it. The weather on that day was so beautiful and so bright. I met many newcomers from other lab and tasted their Bento, and it was so delicious. Many of us made traditional food from their country. We enjoyed a lot!

This spring 2017, we have six new students from several countries.

There are three Japanese, Mamoru Tsurudome, Yoshinori Takahashi, and Kana Yoshida as master students. We have one master student as well from Rwanda Nsengimana Jean Pierre. The last two students are doctor students from Indonesia Mulia Putra and Sommay Shingphachanh from Lao.

Let’s study hard and work hard for our bright future.

Real Life Just Started

It is almost two months after my graduation day, but I still feel a lack of the knowledge that I get. Somehow the more I learn, the more I realize I do not know anything. It sounds classical, but this is how I feel now.

For the past two years, I am very grateful to have an opportunity to meet many great, kind and minded people. I learn a lot from them. Academic's life that I never imagined before made me aware what is the meaning of hard work itself. During my study, it was so tough, and I struggled many times,  but I can feel a point of satisfaction of my own difficulties. I am so grateful to be in the environment of my lab, where all my lab-mates are deeply mindset, critical and it's creating new characters within me.

I just start the real life where I feel enjoy the atmosphere doing research and trying to deepen further my understanding of looking at the new things. Hopefully, I can gain new knowledge from new people in the new environment. The knowledge that I gained is none other than as my provision to build my beloved country, Indonesia.

Hello everyone, my name is Mamoru Tsurudome, a new member in the Baba lab from this April. I am very happy to be welcomed in such a nice community.

I have just graduated from my undergraduate course in Tokyo. I am very exited to pursue my study here in the somewhat comfortable Saijo city.

I plan to join the Zambia program, and I will be sent to a local school in Ndola city next January. I hope to receive many teachings and guidance from Baba sensei and the lab members, as well as gaining strength and knowledge to pursue my research independently. Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu.
