The 39th JASME research presentation meeting at Hiroshima University

2月1日、2日に第39回全国数学教育学会研究発表会(於:広島大学)に参加してきました。研究室からは7名が発表し、参加者の方から質問や意見交換を行っておられました。普段聞くことのない人の発表を聞いたり、他大の院生方との交流を通してアイデアを得たり、学会の醍醐味が分かってきました。
During the past weekend (February 1-2, 2014), it was held the 39th Research Presentation Meeting of the Japan Academic Society of Mathematics Education (JASME) at Hiroshima University. 7 lab mates made a presentation and discussed their research with participants. Through hearing an announcement other researcher presented and exchanging opinions, I learnt or found something new.

2日目の午前中に「日米比較:算数・数学教育における『教材研究』とは何か」と題したシンポジウムが行われ、DePaul大学の高橋昭彦先生はじめ、4名の先生方がシンポジストとしてご発表されておりました。
The symposium of “What is Kyozai Kenkyu in mathematics education -Comparison between Japan and the U. S. case-“ was held in the morning session of second day, then 4 professors made a presentation.

冒頭、高橋昭彦先生は、アメリカならず世界各地で行われるようになった授業研究を紹介され、海外で行われる授業研究をご覧になり、関係者からの質問を受けているうちに、日本の授業研究が海外で紹介されるにあたり、ある視点が欠けていたのではないかと思われたそうです。
First of all, Takahashi sensei (Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, DePaul University) introduced Lesson Study in the U.S. as well as around the world. While he often had been asked many things about Lesson Study and answered them, he might think there would be a gap between teachers in Japan and other countries.

それは、教材研究という視点を持った「問いから始まる授業研究」。
アメリカでは、今までに無かった授業研究という取り組みに対して、そのプロセスに焦点が向かいがちでしたが、プロセスには明確に表れないもので大切なものがあったようです。とても興味深い発表でした。
That is Lesson Study with themes which have a point of Kyozai Kenkyu. According to Baba and Kojima (2005), Kyozai Kenkyu is the begining part of Lesson Study. In order to prepare for the lesson, teachers set objectives of the lesson, analyze pupils and teaching materials, consider flow of the lesson, make the bloack bord plan and set how to evaluate pupils. Through Kyozai Kenkyu, they enhance and polish their knowledge in their professional life. However Kyozai Kenkyu is common things for Japanese teachers, they don’t say about this kind of things explicitly. It might have been focused on process of Lesson Study. It was very interesting presentation for me.

Part 2

(PME: International Group for Psychology of Mathematics Education)に参加してきました。

Indonesia’s A New Curriculum

After many considered too many load in the content and many disparities in implementation level, the Education Level Based Curriculum or KTSP would be replaced with a new one. The new curriculum however would be introduced possibly in 2013.
The Education Level Based Curriculum or KTSP has been introduced since middle of last decade, but along the way this curriculum has harvested many concerns especially related its heavy load for the elementary school level.

Another concern also due to teachers’ quality which is considered to be remain unimproved. KTSP allows teacher to interpret and to implement the process of learning by themselves while referring to the standard of competence and process and standard of passing (Standar Kompetensi, Standar Proses dan Standar Kelulusan) endorsed by the Ministry of National Education.

But, in the implementation, many teachers are considered to have less of competence and professionalism in applying and elaborating these standards into an effective process of teaching and learning.

The new curriculum additionally gives more emphasize on learning process and directional for character building in each level of education. Though reducing the load for the elementary level, in secondary level, the hours for mathematics, science and bahasa Indonesia will be added.

What Indonesian Schools Shall Learn from Japan’s

Having a chance to study in Japan is indeed very meaningful experience in my life. In previous year of my study, me and our course friends were having an opportunity to have school visits in some elementary schools, junior secondary and vocational high schools in Japan.

From visit to these schools, I found out that there are many differences which Indonesian schools or educators shall learn out of, and among others are:

School preparation :
The first impression that I get from many Japanese students in my visit in an elementary school in Saijo is their warmth hearted and friendliness. They made a line as they entered the school gate, with the leader carrying a small flag walked in front of them. Each of those cute little students greeted us with smile “ Ohayo gozaimashita”.

This maybe simple but very meaningful. It somehow showed me that education is not just a matter of study in the classroom, but also even to how to live in a group or community which requires discipline, teamwork, management skills, and leadership, and of course another important character, open heartedness and friendliness, revealed in their smiling faces saying “ohayo gozaimashita”.

School activities :
Japanese elementary schools students were very active and inquisitive in non lesson and in lesson time. In one of no lesson time, those little children show their activities by playing with soils, small insects, pets, and other things without being afraid. Instead those children were somehow observing these animals and soils, and looking so curious about them. Other activities were spent with playing some games with their friends. Some students have a piece of fabric attached with their bodies, while others running after them. In that occasion I happened to be one of the participants in that game.

The active behaviour of children was appeared also in lesson time. In the mathematics class which I observed, I saw how children were very spontaneous and curious with the lesson. Each time the teacher offers a question, many children seem to have no doubt to raise their hands and answer the teachers with their original ideas from their mind.

The condition above offers us some lessons for all schools and educators around the world. As for an Indonesian, I saw how Japanese schools offer different environment and situation for children to learn. Though some efforts have been made to create a character building environment and funs learning for children, many children were still seemed to be passive in learning. In non lesson time, many children only stay in the canteen, chatting with friends or playing games or sports. There are no activities like observing pets, plants, insect as in Japan. And those who play games or sports, when they have to come to the class for lesson, many of them were still left on the field or canteen, or come to class but without concentration because they were very exhausted and hungry after playing.

In lesson time, interaction between students and teacher, and among students, in many schools, seemed to be dominated by teacher.  Many children were quiet doing nothing but listen and follow the teacher instruction. They somehow study but not necessarily learn.

Finally, I would like to say there are many differences and lessons where we can learn from elementary schools in Japan.

INSET Management for Anglophone Countries in Africa (Malawi) 8th February 2012

JICA conducts a variety of technical cooperation activities in developing countries in the basic, higher and technical education sectors.  In line with this, Strengthening of Mathematics and Science in Secondary Education (SMASSE) Project in Malawi, a program between the government of Malawi and Japan through Japan International Corporation Agency organized a four weeks customized training, INSET Management for Anglophone Countries in Africa for Malawi, for eighteen participants from January 21st to February 23rd 2012. The Training took place at Chugoku international Centre, Hiroshima International Plaza, Japan. Participants for the training included School Inspectors, Headteachers and Managers from the Department of Inspectorate and Advisory Services and the Department of Secondary Education respectively. The purpose of the training was twofold:

1.      Fostering of ownership and the creation of independent, sustainable training operation mechanisms for in-service training with a focus on concepts related to the achievement of student-centered lessons as keywords for the in-service training of mathematics and science teachers.

2.      Stimulate country-driven efforts that will encourage participants to “think by themselves” in the context of needs assessment, content development and monitoring & evaluation of INSET activities.

The contents of the training included; Educational Administration in Japan, Role and Challenge of Board of Education, attending an open Lesson Study at Ayagaoka Elementary School, Educational Administration in Japan, School Visit at Waseda Jr. high School, Teachers and Teacher Training in Japan,            ASEI-PDSI, INSET: "Achievement and Challenge"        and others which were conducted by Proffessors from the Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation, Hiroshima University.  The contents were reported to be so inspiring,  one of the participant commented,

I think we can only improve our education if we change our mind set, I take this as a beginning of the start of a new chapter in my career as an Inspector” after one of the sessions. This was in reflection to the words of one of the professors who said

“Look for not a magic stick which can solve everything but rather a way of looking at things from a different angle”

“Less is more than Much”

When I hear Cambodia, I associate Pol Pot, Khmer Rouge, Angkor Wat and so on. Cambodia was one of the countries that I have some chips of its information. I do not know what happens to me, I want to ask someone “May I visit Cambodia tomorrow?”, which means Cambodia became a closer country.

The other day four Cambodian trainees came to Hiroshima and I had an opportunity to help them to make a lesson plan. Because of interpreter It was very difficult to communicate each other even message of information, moreover we could not understand what he or she thought. The latter one was a kind of obstacle in our relationship. I guess we talked to the interpreter not to him or her looking on them.

However human is beyond our capacity. When they spend time together and try to do something together, something to make sympathy is supposed to come. I experienced such a kind of moment in this short training course. After conducting the demo lesson I told them from bottom of my heart “I am so glad that it was better than I expected.” They had a big smiling and held my hand with gratitude. It made me hold them tightly.
I wish they realize the worth of making lessons and teach students who would be teachers in the future.
