Master Seminar Presentation

I am currently studying curriculum development and had to make a presentation on the 30th June, 2012 on the progress of my research. It was a good opportunity for me to get feedback having been working on it for some time. Having listened to a lot of good presentations previously, I was not sure of what to expect. More so that my presentation came just after Mr Nkhatas’ which by any standards was quiet remarkable. I had no problem with the presentation, which I did without any pressure. I felt very unease at the start of the question and answer session, when people seemed to have no questions for me. It seemed as though they disapproved of the presentation. As I was playing with my pen I was wondering what was going on in their heads. Relief came when Mr Gonzales raised his hand to ask the first question. From then on I got a vast amount of comments and questions from the experienced members of the Lab.

My research title is Analysis of High School Mathematics Curriculum in Zambia: Alignment of Objectives with Content. In the development of a curriculum, the objectives are the basis on which materials are selected and content is outlined. Various aspects of the educational program are a means to accomplish basic educational purposes. Hence, if we are to study an educational program systematically and intelligently we must first be sure as to the educational objectives aimed at. My research analyses the curriculum objectives and how the content selection aids at achieving them.

Several thoughts were expressed by the professors and the members of Baba Lab on areas that needed clarifications and improvements. I really appreciate all the questions and comments, and will take them into consideration. Thank you very much.

Surprise and Thrill from the Award Converged to Happiness

I took it as golden opportunity for me to study at Hiroshima University for among other reasons I thought I will broaden my understanding from an international perspective in additional to understanding what goes on in the minds of mathematics teachers in my country. My thoughts have been vindicated through interactions with Professors, colleagues and attending international conferences just to mention but a few.

The Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation, Hiroshima University hosted the 9th Africa Education Forum from 12th to 13th April 2012. The forum drew a lot of participants which included Professors, Researchers and Students from other Universities. I had an opportunity to make a presentation on my research “Secondary Mathematics Teachers beliefs and Practice in Malawi: The case of South East Education”

I had expected to get comments and questions from the Profs and Colleagues after my presentation, which I did. I was so thankful but, I thought and felt I could have done better.
I was thrilled to hear that my presentation was one of the best the following; I was actually surprised, I asked myself why and how? It was so wonderful because the surprise suddenly converged into happiness.

But
I still beliefs in the words of John Ruskin (1500) who said and I quote:
“The highest reward for a man’s toil is not what he gets for it but what he becomes by it”

I thank Prof. Baba, Prof. Ishihara and all lab members for the support, encouragement you continue giving me.

Master Seminar Presentation: My Impression

Just like the other presentations I have ever made during master seminars in Baba lab, I got so nervous before I started my presentation, and I felt I was not well prepared for it until I had started more especially this day because there were four student who I took as special guests; Two were from Tokyo University of Science and the others from Hiroshima University in the faculty of Education. I felt so honoured by their presence in the end; it was just like an international seminar. After I had finished my research presentation on Secondary Teachers Beliefs and Their Practice in Malawi: The Case of South East Education Division. I got comments that added depth to my understanding of how complexities surrounding classroom interactions that concern my research area. Fascinating questions were asked from lab members who had redirected my thinking and approach on my research. Though I had tried beyond the best of my abilities to clarify some of the issues pertaining to methodology and results I still felt I haven’t gone even halfway on my research. I am happy because it gave me more motivation and energy to work on my research to understand Malawian Mathematics Teachers Beliefs and Practices as they unfolded in my research.  Making presentation in Baba lab is memorable to any students’ life because of the diversity of thoughts and backgrounds of the members, one feels what it means to live in an academic space, and I like most.
