SUMMER CAMP

On the morning of 6th August, 2012 members of Ikeda, Shimizu and Baba Labs gathered at around zero five thirty to start the trip to Tsunoshima. There was good organisation as everyone who was supposed to have been on the trip had arrived in time. At about 06 30am the vehicles rolled away from the International Development and Cooperation (IDEC) building to begin the journey.

Tsunoshima is an island located in the Sea of Japan. Located in the north west of Yamaguchi prefecture, it is a part of Shimonoseki city. It is also a part of the Kita-Nagato, Kaigan Quasi-National Park. This profile made it a perfect place to have our summer camp. The island connected by beautiful 1780 meters long bridge to the main land. I gathered it is the second longest in Japan.

By mid-morning we had arrived at our destination in the heat of the day. We drove to the sea to cool off. The water was cold and salty. Since I am not good at swimming I just remained in the shallow part as those who cool swim ventured into the sea. We had a number of interaction up to about 15 30 when we went to the site we were to lodge.

In the evenings we had a braai and enjoyed some cool drinks. Later in the night we had played with fireworks, this was fun. Afterwards we retreated to sleep at various times.

In the morning we divided into two group one chose to come back straight to Hiroshima the other went to Akiyoshido to view the lime stone caves. I joined the trip to the caves. The caves are 1000 meters long and very educational. They brought to life my secondary school Geography about stalactites and stalagmites.

After this visit we come back to Hiroshima. The trip was wonderful in many ways as it was refreshing, educational and provided an opportunity to see Japan.

Education in Indonesia

Staying abroad for more than a year sometimes makes someone feels a deeper respect to the native country.  Me for example, having lived in Japan for more than a year, I feel so concerned when I see news about current situation about my country, fascinated when someone cook Indonesian meals, and interested if someone use our traditional clothes.

The next August 17 this year, Indonesia celebrate its 67 anniversary. Having fought for 350 years our country we finally got independence. Yet even if we got the independence, there are so many things we need to fight. We must still fight against poverty, inequality, illiteracy, unemployment and many other things.

Back to 67 years ago, our country was still very backward. Only few people got education. Those only from the rich families, or high class society can get education. Not many people can enter high education. Today we put hope a lot for changes through education. We have so many problems because there still too few people get educated.

As one of lucky Indonesian who studies abroad, I hope education will play important role to reduce unemployment, settle many horizontal conflict, eradicate the poverties, and many other issues in our society.

I believe that many problems in our country now is because people do not know the importance of education. By education, I believe there will be no more act of indifference. For education should make people responsible for their beloved country.  And finally there will be no more act of indifference towards poverties, unemployment, conflicts, and so on.
