Experiences through background

Well, I am from Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. Through the history, Cambodia has been famous for Angkor Wat temple, titled the Kingdom of the world. It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (Khmer calls present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shaiva tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. Unfortunately, Cambodia had been colonized by French for almost a century. Moreover, the Cambodian Genocide refers to the attempt of Khmer Rouge party leader “Pol Pot” to nationalize and centralize the peasant farming society of Cambodia virtually overnight, in accordance with the Chinese Communist agricultural model. This resulted in the gradual devastation of over 25% of the country’s population in just three short years. Fortunately, Cambodia survived from that black Genocide through a great Khmer National Compatriot, Samdech Akeak Moha Sena Padey Techo Hun Sen. However, this country has still encountered many difficulties and problems to be solved.

As for me, I earned bachelor degree of Mathematics from Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) in 2004. I have taught mathematics at high school level for 9 years. The dream I always had in life is to go to study abroad because I need oversee experiences from developed countries like Japan, Australia, USA, and so on to develop and to improve educational system; especially, in the field of mathematics. My great desire is to explore how mathematics education contributes to the society. There is will, there is way. I finally passed JDS scholarship to study in Japan as my wish.

Teaching task and research are my passion and my goal is to get Khmer's children out of poverty because of the darkness of their illiteracy. I am going to improve my teaching tactics and skills of Mathematics; especially, probability field which has been very much adored by me. I strongly hope I know how to lead and to target students to approach the key points of lessons. I am going to bring my home country the ability and competencies from my study and experiences I earned in Japan to push prosperity and growth for our nation. Moreover, I deeply believe I can produce useful and potential human resources to effectively and efficiently compete with local areas; especially, ASEAN community in order to edify our whole country fame.

Comparing to other courses in mathematics, probability and conditional probability are unique and difficult for students and teachers to understand. Students perform poorly on probability for the national examination and teachers lack meta-cognitive and professional skills for teaching this subject. More interestingly, most teachers not only in Cambodia, but also around the world try to avoid the teaching of this subject. Therefore, research interest is: “Students’ and Pre-service Teachers’ understanding of Conditional Probability in Cambodia”. In the 21st century, mathematics educators pay much attention to probabilistic and statistical literacy which is much more focused on real life problems. So in this study, I want to investigate and to explore how students and teachers’ understanding of conditional probability contribute to the society.

In conclusion, Japan is a developed, peaceful, and civilized country with very naturally beautiful landscape. Japanese people are friendly, helpful, and critical. The weather is good and comfortable and the food is very secure and safe which I loved them very much. Living here benefits me two things. First, I gain life skills. I live lonely in my apartment that I feel stronger than I did in my home country. I know a lot of Japanese culture because I have many Japanese friends. More interestingly, I joined many international ceremonies like camping, cherry blossom flower, and ASEAN festivals. My second thing is academic life which much interests me. I can work individually and collectively. I individually work hard on research and some coursework.  I can work in group with international students.  I will bring these good experiences and great knowledge to develop my home country. I like living in a challenging, competitive, and innovative world.

My new life

Walking away from such an atmosphere like in Hiroshima university  is prolly the best thing I ever remember. Now I have moved on and within less than a two weeks after my departure I was talking to else people and in less than a month were already in a relationship with their atmosphere. I posted all of my stay in Japan already talking about moving in together call it whatever i like, it all seems to be done with good hospitality I do still care in alot of ways, but in most ways I can't forget.

for 2 years on and off , babalab always managed  to say the right things. It fills my head with hope and dreams that will help me live new life.

My life may not be perfect but as I work towards the society's need, I wish I could say I wish each and everyone well but I really don’t want to struggle. most days I think how to get good life.

Coming back

In Indonesia language, the teacher is Guruwhich has to mean in Javanese tradition as an acronym of “diguGu lan ditiRU (people who trusted and followed). These two words have deep meaning. Become a teacher should be able to be “digugu” which means as a teacher, their words should be used as a role model. In other words, teachers must have the dignity and knowledge were quite high. The second word is “ditiru” which means what teacher said (knowledge), his spirit and attitude will be followed or emulated by the students. So not only responsible for teaching subjects that were his job, but more than that also educates morals, ethics, integrity, and character. Martin Luther King Jr. stated, Intelligence plus character; that is the true goal of education.”

Some people said students like a white paper, so the teacher should give an ink and try to draw and tell the students what should they did. Now I can say based on my short experience if it was not right. Students have their own knowledge based on their experience also. They do not totally do not understand about the certain subject, the students only not able to construct their mind yet to share their idea. If the teacher as a role model is concern, then the teacher should be able to read and understand what the students’ thought and prepare the strategy to give the feedback.

Finally, I can go back to my hometown where I had left for 8 years.
During school 9 years at this place, I'm just an ordinary student who thinks only of himself how to graduate school with good grades.

Now I can feel how difficult to be a teacher at that time. Various challenges that I never even imagined, I felt it during my field research. Starting from making the lesson plan, conduct the lesson and reviewing what I did in the classroom after finish the class. It was very difficult for me to create a learning environment according to my expectation. I need to use a different approach for each student. Their character is very unique and their response during the class are varied so I need to think what in their mind and give different feedback to stimulate their idea. All of the experience is new for me. Although I used to teach in senior high school three months for field work when I was an undergraduate student, but I can feel the difference in the difficulties faced by the elementary school teacher to make a deal with children. As a researcher, I have to pay attention to the situation and conditions in the classroom. Whatever is changed, the atmosphere or even the mood of every student in the class. I am very grateful to get this precious experience.
In my field research, in order to improve the students’ interest (gain the elementary students’ mood is very difficult if teacher can not make a creative approach) and clarify their understanding relate word problem, I introduced one of the traditional game in Indonesia called Jake (in Alor regency, although they call it with different name based on their environment where they lived). In elementary level, the students need more concrete things to explain the mathematics than abstract things. In the level of this stage, the students’ have some image or knowledge whether it comes from their family environment, friend (by playing together),etc. Learn based experience is my concern to do my field research. I hope the result of my research can be useful in terms of Alor regency’s context is concern.
